Built in 1508, this waterside Castle is superbly located in the village which takes its name situated near the UNESCO protected city of Trogir. The location is stunning as one side of the castle plunges straight into the sea. In the past the castle was a hotel. It has been unused for around 20 years.
Along the bay, between Split and Trogir, the seven Kastel (collectively known as The Kastela) were built by local noble families as residences and fortifications against the threatened Turkish onslaught. Villages grew up around the castles and today a series of more or less continuous houses, restaurants and cafes stretch along the bay, known locally as the Riva.
In terms of location, it is very well situated. Split is around 20km away, with the attractions of Diocletian’s Palace and the ferry port’s access to the well-known islands of Brac, Hvar and Vis, as well as destinations further afield such as Korcula and Dubrovnik. Split International airport is just 6km away. The motorway now connects Split with Zagreb and the rest of Europe very quickly.
Located on the water’s edge, the main entrance is found on the north of the castle. impressive double gates take you into an internal courtyard, which is shaded by a fig tree. On the right is a large, open-plan room with bar and listed mill for pressing olives. On the far side of the courtyard, there is an area suitable for a reception and ground floor WC’s. To the left is a large kitchen complex. During the 1980’s a chimney, opening out from the kitchen, caught fire, bringing down a substantial part of the main wall. This left a jagged opening in the facade which has permission to be reinstated. Moving to the upper floors, there is potential to create a number of en-suite bedrooms.
This building requires complete renovation and has a project for a 5-star boutique hotel. It is a romantic building, with stunning sea views and it’s history would add to the cache of the proposed hotel. |
